2014 (KR/EN)

Often, exceedingly ordinary landscapes conceal a kind of new colony stemming from material desires that verge on dissipation. Advancing through meaningless movement, the people just hover about within the canvas, but the image isnt strange at all. This isnt because the backgrounds of the paintings are modern, but because these landscapes are no different from the whole of human history. But the hunger for purpose continues. This is the eruption of the desire to escape the system and the feeble display of human ideals that lie hidden away at the bottom, losing force.

While my previous works were mainly an observation on the social system and people of contemporary cities, my recent work are expressing symbolic forms out of specific places with historical background they have. For example, Broken Sea (2013) is about Baekryungdo the island located in the northernmost end of South Korea and in between two Koreas (South and North). Despite its geopolitical factors, there are residents living their daily life. During my last visit, I took some photos representing their circumstance such as rocks, ropes, wire mesh, fishnet, and more. On my canvas I intended bifurcate sea putting those elements in the sea separating on the canvas with red based color suggesting blood and flesh. Moving wave and fixed sand hills leads distinct trace from some past moment. It reconstructs a sight of something that doesnt exist, and raises up issues of individual and history weaved in the net of past and present.
